We measured the activity of monoamine oxidase (MAO) in platelets taken from 25 patients in the acute period of ischemic hemispheric insult. The neurological deficit of the patients on arrival and discharge from the hospital was evaluated using the data from clinical examinations and tests. In 64% of the patients with ischemic insult, we found a considerable increase in the activity of platelet MAO on the 3rd–5th day of the insult, as compared to the control group (P < 0.001). We found a correlation between the increase in MAO activity on the 3rd–5th day after ischemic insult and a decrease in neurological deficit on the 21st day after the insult.
