How does it feel for an athlete to face retirement? Some professional athletes leave sport on their own, while some are forced to leave because of age, injury, or because intense competition forces them out via a coach’s decision. The way athletes finish their careers has a significant impact on how they cope with the transition and adapt to life after sport. Is each one of them ready to accept the new reality and to search for a new purpose in life? Alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription drugs can become a significant problem in retirement as athletes turn to these substances for emotional relief or exchange exercise dependence for substance addiction. This chapter gives an overview of psychological and physiological predisposing factors and covers some features of addiction that are unique to retired athletes.
