A major depressive episode (MDE) is a transdi- agnostic nosographic construct straddling Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD). The inflation of specifiers in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) can be viewed as an ef- fort to map various hues of severity and chronicity, clinging onto a categorical framework. A potentially useful and more parsimonious approach to capturing much of the hetero- geneity of depressive disorders is to classify them along two dimensions, one reflecting severity and the other chronicity.
